The latest example I thought of was blockchain. It’s all over the media right now because we’re in the middle of a crypto craze. The blog posts people have written for our company with that buzzword in it have soared. Companies are announcing how they are going to start using blockchain in their business…often times in ways that are impossible or make no sense.
And now our CEO is mentioning bringing it into our marketing consultancy, which…also makes no sense. But people don’t care. It’s a buzzword. If someone’s boss at a tech company just reads a random article, sees blockchain is hot right now and announces to their subordinate that they want to get into that, the subordinate (in my mind) doesn’t seem to care to understand it – they just want to check that box.
Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Account-Based Marketing…The sellers don’t care to understand, the purchasers also don’t care. No one is doing due diligence – they’re just trying to make money off the latest craze and look good in their boss’ eyes. Its times when I see this stuff happen over and over again that I realize somthing: lots of people are lazy. Some seem to do the absolute bare minimum.
Lots of people don’t actually like their jobs: they’re not even thinking critically. They’re just following the crowd and trying to pick up scraps. It’s crazy to me, but that seems to be what’s happening based on my experience.
