Are Performance Reviews Useless?

For the first 5 years of my career – with 5 different companies – I never received a performance review. Not once. Not even after asking and hounding my manager for months. I hounded him because I was told performance reviews were how your manager evaluated you to give you raises and promotions, but as I soon learned, in my industry that’s not exactly the case. My Longest Job Ever: 1 Year, 11 Months

It’s time to celebrate!

Don’t laugh – this is a big deal for me! Quitting and getting laid off is basically a hobby of mine. I’ve had 6 jobs in 7 years. I quit twice and have been laid off 3 times. My shortest stint was 3 weeks. Oh ad agency life! This milestone snuck up on me and I’m a bit shocked it happened. My current job is now officially my longest ever: 1 year, 11 months at the same company! Continue reading “My Longest Job Ever: 1 Year, 11 Months”

That Time I Laughed In A Financial Advisor’s Face

It was an accident, I swear! As I mentioned in my post detailing my work history in advertising, I had a mentor that I was introduced to through my cousin. Despite us originally meeting to discuss if I should try a new career after the hell that was my first job, she referred me to two other positions later in my career – both of which I was offered and accepted. In the first position I didn’t work directly with this mentor (let’s call her Grace). In the second I did. It was during this job that I had the fateful encounter…And how this happened is also strange and convoluted. Buckle up.

Another Retirement Prequel

Our living room view in Ecuador

My trip to Ecuador allowed me to explore more of my possible early retired life and try to discover who Retired Me might be. There are a few goals I have for retirement that I tried to accomplish during this trip, such as:

  1. Go to sleep soon after sunset and rise with the sun
  2. Watch the sunrise and sunset as much as possible

Do Vacations Rejuvenate You?

Short answer: No 🙂 . End of post.

Just kidding…I’ll explain. A few years ago I was laying on the deserted beach in Vietnam. The wind was blowing through my hair, the waves were crashing, the sun was slowly rising in the sky and I was thinking about…Emails. Yep. Emails. Specifically client emails: Continue reading “Do Vacations Rejuvenate You?”

Carfree For Life

Atlanta: The Land Of Horrible Traffic

So I was born and raised in Atlanta. Something that might surprise people is that Atlanta has horrendous traffic. We’ve been on the top 10 list of most congested cities since I was born and while I was growing up we were right behind New York and LA. We had the third worst traffic in the US. Remember The Feeling Of The Working Weekend

I want to make sure I remember the feeling of a weekend during my working career. I’m sitting here at 8:30pm on a Friday, waiting for someone that owes me a deliverable to email me back. Such is the life of a project manager/ client service person. You bother people, remind them of what’s happening and then check their work and try to gently nudge them to complete what was technically due at 5pm today. It’s a balance of staying on their good side (so they’ll continue to be a good colleague) and pushing them. Difficult balance. Continue reading “Remember The Feeling Of The Working Weekend”

That Burst of ‘Purpose’

At times I feel a strange burst of energy flow through my body at work. This energy compels me to complete the latest task, optimize the latest project and plan my strategy for the next meeting. I’m not sure purpose is the correct word – maybe it’s motivation? Inspiration? I’m not sure. Productivity seems so generic. Continue reading “That Burst of ‘Purpose’”
