I’m writing this while looking out at the Green Mountains of Vermont while some wild turkeys frolic in our backyard and birds chirp nearby.
I Went To Vermont
My Mom decided to visit so we showed her some of the local beauty in our area and went to Vermont together! It was lovely to relax with mountains in the background, explore a new place, and show her that there’s more than she may expect in rural areas 🙂 .
We originally planned to explore the nearby small towns and enjoy some Vermont delicacies like maple syrup 😉 , but in the end, we just relaxed and went for a hike before my Mom and Partner completed 3 puzzles and I knit by the fireplace. It was a lovely interlude after my time in Phoenix.
I Went To Arizona
I went to Phoenix, Arizona to visit my oldest friend – our friendship is 20 years old and that sounds so strange to me 🙂 . She has 4 kids so most of my time was spent helping with all that entails, but we also made time to eat my weight in In N Out, visit a pool, and go to a spa for massages. It was a lovely time.

We Did Home Stuff
I enjoyed the part of April when I was home by diving into April activities, such as a family Easter Dinner, Easter Egg Hunt and a new-to-me tradition of finding Easter Baskets. I also enjoyed finding rainbows after some April showers and helping a family member move.
Meanwhile, my Partner went all out on his homesteader journey this month. He went to a Seder Dinner while I was traveling, and bought a dutch oven and is now all about bread baking!

I’m very excited about this new hobby because he has gotten really into it and because the bread he makes is DELICIOUS! It tastes like it came from an artisan bakery even though it’s just cheap flour, water, yeast and salt.
How did those regular things become this lovely little loaf?!?! My mind is blown. It seems like magic. My Partner then went to the next level and got a sourdough starter from his SIL and now we have another pet to go with my plant 🙂 . I guess we have two things we need to ask people to look after while we’re away now – that’s how they get you lol.
In addition to that excitement, my Partner also did some construction and helped rip up and replace flooring in a family member’s house. He also got a trash grabber for Christmas and has started picking up trash around town.
I’ve gone out with him a few times and it’s nice to help clean up our community with this classic retirement activity, but it also seems to have made me more angry about trash because we see that people constantly litter their cigarette butts right next to a trash can after we just cleaned them all up. Oh well – keep on keeping on I guess.
TSA PreCheck Touchless ID
Once again Thrifty Traveler’s free newsletter has taught me a travel hack. Apparently some airports and airlines now have an additional TSA PreCheck lane called Touchless ID, which is even faster.
And since I was traveling this month when security lines were reaching record lengths, I was willing to look into any possibility to not feel like I live in an airport.
So according to Thrifty Traveler, TSA PreCheck Touchless ID “comes with all the usual benefits of PreCheck – you get to keep your shoes, light jackets, and belts on, and you don’t have to worry about taking liquids and electronics out of your bag – it uses facial recognition to identify pre-screened travelers, saving you from having to hand your ID over to an agent before sending your stuff through the screening area.
The real kicker? Few people even know this option exists, and the lines are typically much shorter than those for regular security or PreCheck.“
So my curiosity was peaked. The Thrify Traveler article about Touchless ID lists what airlines and airports have this option and Phoenix Airport (where I was going to be flying back out of) is on the list. So I decided to try it and I was very impressed.
Before my flight, I had to go into my American Airlines app and opt in for Touchless ID by making sure my passport was logged with their airline. Then when I was flying out of Phoenix, there was a regular TSA PreCheck line and next to it was a TSA PreCheck Touchless ID line.
I went through the latter and when I got to the front of the line I was told to stand at a certain spot and they took my picture – just like regular PreCheck these days, but I didn’t have to hand over my ID or my boarding pass and I was let through in less than 5 seconds. It was wild and I’ll definitely keep that option in mind when I’m flying through a participating airport in the future.
Also my Mom has used Touchless ID in Atlanta and said that when you arrive at that airport there’s a section for Touchless ID where you can skip the regular check in line and instead give them your bag curbside. Cool!
I Got An Earlier Flight (For Free)
Since my Mom used to work for an airline, I’m not always sure what’s normal traveler knowledge and what’s more insider knowledge. I mentioned to a friend that I got on an earlier flight for free and she didn’t know that was an option, so I’m mentioning it here in case this isn’t common knowledge.
I arrived at the airport for an American Airlines flight very early since I wasn’t sure what the security line situation would be and when I looked at the TV that showed all the gates for flights, I saw that there was another flight to my destination that was leaving soon and was next to my regular gate.
So I popped over to the earlier flight and just told them I was on the later flight and asked if they had any free space. They said yes and told me it would be a middle seat though – I said that was ok and I took it.
I was then printed a new boarding pass and I saw that my seat assignment put me in Main Cabin Extra, the section of an American Airlines plane that has extra legroom and free drinks (the latter of which I didn’t take advantage of because it was an early morning flight). All that to say – I got an earlier flight and more legroom for no extra dollars 🙂 . It never hurts to ask.
We Renewed Our Lease
We decided to renew our lease for another year! We’ve been loving our apartment and we were traveling for 1/2 of our lease in 2025 and for 2026, it looks like I might hit our 1/3 of the year traveling goal.
However, we’re just loving being near our family and doing all these fun local things that are helped by staying in one spot like helping family with gardens, tapping maple trees and boiling the sap to get delicious syrup and also knitting projects that require a dump truck of yarn 🙂 .
So we renewed for another year and doing so was so different from renting in a big city. I literally just texted my landlord that we wanted to renew and she responded immediately saying that was “Wonderful news” and making sure we still loved the apartment (we did).
Our $800/month rent that includes heat and all utilities outside electric is now going to be… $800/month. I don’t think I’ve ever had an apartment that hasn’t raised the rent every year, so that was interesting.
However, it might not be the case for long 🙂 . Right before we renewed, our landlord gave us a heads up that they might have to increase the rent $50-$100/month because of increased building taxes if they can’t contest the increase like they’re trying to do.
In New York State if a landlord wants to raise rent 5% or more, they need to give a minimum of 30 days written notice (or 60 days if you’ve been there a year and 90 days if you’ve been there 2+ years). All good to know! Obviously that increase wouldn’t be a big deal so we’ll see what happens with that.
Anyway, this experiment with having a homebase has gone even better than I expected! We’ve been having a great time, still enjoying traveling, but also loving being at home. It’s a great balance. I still feel wildly busy since friends and family in the area are always doing something fun that I want to join, but it’s also nice to have my own space to recharge after the fact.
I Changed Our Renters’ Insurance
After State Farm betrayed me (full story below), I wanted to leave them ASAP and find new renters’ insurance. And they gave me even more reason to do so after sending me a letter that they would be auto-renewing my insurance for DOUBLE what they previously charged. Absolutely not.
To add insult to injury, when I first looked into it, State Farm doesn’t give you back money for months you pre-paid if you want to leave earlier than when your annual policy ends. So I waited until my year was almost up to get out of it.
I wanted to bundle my renters’ insurance with the independent insurance broker I switched my car insurance to. Renters’ insurance with them is almost half as expensive as my previous State Farm policy and bundling it makes my car insurance even less expensive as well!
I now have renters’ insurance for $7.25/month total and got $56 off my car insurance going forward along with a $28 check to make up for my lowered auto insurance premium for the remainder of my current policy.
I Paid Estimated NY State & Fed Taxes
More adulting stuff 🙂 . I paid estimated federal taxes like I have been for the last year, but the new aspect of this is that I paid estimated New York State taxes as well. It turns out that NY State wants people to pay estimated taxes if they will owe more than $300, which I always will because NY State taxes investment income as regular income. So this is another quarterly to do list item for me.
I Did Car Stuff
I Saved On Gas
I’m still getting used to the different gas station chains in the northeast and I’ve been shopping around since gas has skyrocketed with the idiotic war the US and Isreal started in Iran – so I’ve been noticing gas prices more recently since they went from around $3 to over $4 in NY State rather quickly.
When I was at the chain Cumberland Farms recently, I noticed that on the gas pump, the price was different for Non-Members and Members. I didn’t realize gas stations had any type of memberships so I decided to check it out. Cumberland Farms memberships are called SmartRewards and it’s FREE and gives 10 cents off per gallon always and various promos sporadically.
When you sign up, there’s also a promo that your first 3 fill ups get 30 cents off per gallon. However, there is a catch that I didn’t find clear when reading their landing page.
Apparently you ONLY get the 10 cents off if you pay with your checking account, not credit or debit cards. This was explicitly said in their FAQ, but I doubt regular people are diving that deep like my neurotic brain wanted to.
So luckily I read that and linked my checking account to this membership and can confirm that I’ve gotten all the promos they promised. So if you’re in the northeast and going to Cumbies anyway, this is a way to save a bit on gas prices that I wasn’t aware of and wanted to share.
I also suspected that other gas stations might have similar programs to save on gas, which I never thought to even look into. My FIL casually mentioned that he has saved over $1,500 with SmartRewards for doing basically nothing so I’m glad I signed up.
I Got An E-ZPASS
After our last road trip I had issues paying a $1.20 Massachusetts toll, so this month we got E-ZPass, which covers most of the northeast US! We paid $25 and they sent us the pass, which includes the $25 and lets us add money later or have it auto-refill. Lovely!
I Did Car Repairs
Once again owning something is worse than renting 🙂 . Our car keeps having small issues, which are fixable, but take a little time and thought.
I much prefer letting a rental car company handle these small issues. But I guess this is the life I signed up for. Maybe one day I’ll enjoy this kind of problem solving – one can dream.
One of our rear doors got stuck and wouldn’t open. So I tried to feel around to figure out what was wrong and instead changed something so then it wouldn’t close. Oops!
So I called in reinforcements. My FIL came over with a screwdriver, looked at the working latches and used the screwdriver to get the door latch to match the working latches and it worked! It seemed like we had to press unlock on the doors that weren’t working to make the latch get back into position to then use the screwdriver. Phew!
I also used WD-40 to get rid of some headlight fogginess, which worked well! It also worked well to get off residue from the window from my phone mount. However, my headlights are still a little foggy, so when I feel like it, I’m going to try a new method I saw on YouTube that involves toothpaste. We’ll see what happens 🙂 .
The car was also missing a tiny part on the driver’s door panel when we bought it and I thought “well – this is my life now,” but I had the wild thought that maybe I could get a replacement part and yep they exist! The piece is called an Armrest Door Handle Pull Pocket Cap Cover and I bought a 2 piece replacement for $7. Amazing!
And finally, we noticed on the first warm day in month that one of our rear windows doesn’t work when we press the automatic window opener on the driver door panel or that door’s panel. I’m not sure what’s wrong and am open to any suggestions, but if I can’t figure it out, I’ll text my mechanic…at some point.
I Got My Annual Car Inspection
Somehow it’s already been a year since we bought our car so it was time for another annual inspection! I once again went to Midas and their pro-tip of just texting them to schedule an appointment really worked out – way better than my last fiasco using their website.
When my car was cleared, they once again tried to upsell me on things my car doesn’t need, but they didn’t push after I said no. However, they did say something new: that I needed to come back and get my tires re-torqued after 50 miles since they had to remove a tire to check something.
The Midas I went to for the inspection was far from my house so I walked into a different one in another state and they were able to help me and re-torque my tires for free. They got to it immediately and it was done in like 30 seconds. Very impressive.
I Knitted
My big knitting news is that I FINISHED MY SAVEN SWEATER!!! Here’s that project page on Ravelry with all the specific details a knitter might be interested in, but here’s the high level: I started working on this sweater on Halloween and it’s taken me this long to finish.
I did complete several other smaller projects during that time, but I suspected this sweater might be my Everest when I started it and I was right, but not in the way I thought. While the cables are complicated, after a while I learned how to do them and shockingly…I got bored. So I had to think of a way to switch things up!
This month I taught myself to knit and purl without looking! I basically just feel where the stitch is and then am able to knit or purl it without looking down and that’s really increased my knitting speed and allowed me to watch things fully while knitting.
I usually listen to YouTube videos and semi-watch them while knitting, but this month I did a Monsterverse Movie Marathon and it was so fun! That’s why you’ll see all those monster movies on my watchlist below. It was a surprisingly fantastic time even though a lot of those movies are bad and it allowed me to crank on this sweater and finish it before it was too hot to wear!
To prepare for finishing my sweater, I blocked it and bought Blocking Mats with Pins and a Wool Wash. I haven’t used the wash yet, but the blocking mats and pins were lovely.
I also enjoyed that the lovely KnitPicks Twill Worsted yarn I used doesn’t smell like anything (unlike the West Yorkshire Spinners Fleece Bluefaced Leicester Aran I used on my first knitted sweater that made my towel smell like sheep while blocking it 🙂 ). And obviously it all worked out – I blocked all my pieces and seamed them together (my first time seaming) and I think it turned out great!
I also learned a fun way to remember how to block pieces properly – and similar to the steps of how to knit, it’s wonderfully violent 😉 :
- Drown it (until the bubbles are gone)
- Crush its soul (gently)
- Make it into a little burrito (in a towel)
In addition to finishing that project, I also taught several people to knit! I taught a college friend to knit and helped her start with her first colorwork, which is the Resistance Garden Cowl with all proceeds of the pattern and bundled yarn going to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center.
I also taught two family members to knit and another family member I previously taught to knit finished her first project! My pyramid scheme continues – and just like a real pyramid scheme, it only costs people money instead of making them any 🙂 .
I Played Video Games
I’ve discovered my new favorite video game 🙂 . It’s called Small Spaces and I learned about it from one of my favorite GameTubers who does “Indie Dev Day” where he tries new indie games and I’ve learned about a lot of great stuff through his exploration.
So now I’m going to rave about this game that took over my life this month 🙂 . As background, I’m not one for decorator games. I prefer straight up gameplay in life sims and usually just download a house from the gallery and start playing, but I was intrigued by the premise of Small Spaces possibly because I’ve lived in cities where I had to figure out how to fit my stuff into small spaces.
So I decided to buy Small Spaces to try it and I love it so much. One of the reasons I love it is the premise, which is even more than I thought.
It’s about decorating spaces and making them liveable in different cities around the world. I LOVE that it’s not all in one city or in one type of “Cityton” like where the Saw series takes place. The game has multiple cities and countries, which is reflected in the architecture and the furniture available.
The game has 2 main modes: Unpack and Design. And Unpack mode has 3 levels: Easy, Medium and Hard that are all different designs. I really enjoyed that it has these different options because just jumping into Designing my own space without guardrails seemed intimidating my first time.
So I went to Unpack mode where it gives you all the objects to unpack, and if you want a Snap option that will also tell you where to put an item. Or you can decide yourself!
When I began the game I started on Unpack > Easy and it gave me confidence to play more of the game and also ideas of how I would change the space in Design mode where I have full control. After I completed that Unpack level, I went to Design mode and made a lovely little space for myself in NYC. Interestingly I decided where to put the virtual furniture the same way I optimized actual small spaces I lived in within Manhattan.
I then went back to Unpack mode and tried Medium difficulty and was blown away because this game also lets you create different levels in a space and even different floors! The high ceilinged room I was previously working in was now a loft I was helping to unpack and I felt like my brain was expanding while the game was helping me realize all the possibilities of a 3D space.
So I’m absolutely obsessed. I love how this game is designed to be easily accessible to newbies like me, I love the look of the game and I find it strangely calming – which is unlike how I feel when moving into a small space in real life 🙂 .
Small Spaces is more of an architectural and efficiency challenge than a straight up interior design game and I think that’s why I love it. I also really enjoy the paragraphs they provide about the people that live in these spaces and what they care about.
It helps when I want to design the space and just to see what they might need and value. It also makes the game feel very human compared to a game where I’m just decorating for the sake of it.

- Caleb by Cora Rose
To see the other books I read this month and my ratings of them, I have a Goodreads account here. I had a lovely time reading this month and I have a ridiculous number of books I’m currently reading with more in my queue – it’s the best place to be 🙂 .
Also the above Book Club I mentioned was with my Partner and my Mom! This was our second meeting for our second book together and it always leads to a lovely discussion.
I Wrote 4 Posts
In case you missed it, this month I published the below posts:
- The Month Of Home: March 2026 Recap
- Review: TransPennine Express Train from Liverpool, England to Edinburgh, Scotland
- My Life Goal Is Contentment, Not Happiness
- Lessons Learned After 5 Years Staying In Airbnbs
And this month in the realm of “weird opportunities I declined/ignored” we have:
- A company that wants to paywall my writing to have me make “an extra $10K to $20K per month”…no thx
- Travel insurance I’ve never used
- An AI travel planner (vom)
- A will & estate planning service I’ve never used
Physical
Sleep
My sleep was really good this month! I did get sick for a few days, which made sleeping a little difficult for a bit, but otherwise I’ve been doing really well! I’ve been falling asleep and staying asleep outside my 4am bathroom break that I can’t seem to get rid of no matter how early I cut off my tea and water consumption. Maybe this is just my old lady life now 🙂 .
Also I’ve been reading before bed and that’s been helping me fall asleep fairly quickly, which is awesome. I just have to make sure I’m reading something boring or not too exciting to make sure that I don’t stay up all night finishing a book…like I did once this month. Oops! #NoRegrets
Food
This month I went off keto to visit my friend in Phoenix because I was planning to just eat whatever she wanted and of course my beloved In N Out, so I took the whole week off there. I also took a few days off here and there to enjoy local NY State delicacies.
However, I was keto the whole time while on our vacation in Vermont which I was impressed by though all credit goes to my Mom who had a keto menu and grocery list ready. In the end I ate keto 60% of the time, took 12 days off keto – not bad!
Exercise
I continued my pilates to help my back/hips feel better this month until I tried something else: I got a new mattress! And I’m loving it so much that I might write a whole post about it if its magic continues. It’s made my body feel a lot better, so much so that I barely did pilates after buying it, which is my usual daily go to to help in addition to lifting 3x a week.
But I did continue lifting and I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with my 3 minutes between sets. It’s too short to write coherent sentences for something on this blog so I started knitting something easy like the sock in between sets and that was pretty perfect. So productive 😉 !
Mental
Learning
So it’s time for my favorite segment: Fun Facts Nobody Asked For! Here’s what I learned and explored this month:
Vermont
- We went to the Green Mountains in Vermont this month and I was surprised to learn that Vermont actually has the nickname “The Green Mountain State” – I thought it would have something to do with maple syrup or moose or something. The Green Mountains were formed 400 million years ago and its rocks are thought to be some of the oldest in the world
- Further, the name “Vermont” comes from two French words: vert meaning “green,” and mont meaning “mount/mountain” – this state is really all about that mountain range!
- I didn’t realize that the capital of Vermont is Montpelier…I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that city. Oops 🙂 . But it might be for good reason, it’s the smallest US capital with only about 8,000 residents
- Vermont produces approximately 50% of the nation’s maple syrup (almost 2 million gallons a year, which is enough to fill about 40,000 bathtubs) and it’s made from the sap of their state tree, The Sugar Maple!
- Vermont is also 1 of 4 US States that have banned billboards
Astronomy
I greatly enjoyed looking at the stars and constellations in the darkness of the Vermont wilderness. However, I didn’t love being awakened in the night by the almost full moon blasting me in the face. It sure is bright in the middle of nowhere 🙂 .
Birds
Birding was also awesome in Vermont. Here are the birds I saw:
Yellow Belied Sapsucker, Red-Breasted Nuthatch, Northern Flicker, Black-Capped Chickadee, Eastern Phoebe, Chipping Sparrow, Wild Turkey, American Robin, Common Grackle, Blue Jay, Yellow Rumped Warbler, Broad-Winged Hawk, Barred Owl
And here were some fun sights in New York:
Golden Crowned Kinglet, Eastern Towhee, Red-Winged Blackbird, Brown-Headed Cowbird, Tufted Titmouse, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay, Black-Capped Chickadee
And finally, here are the flying friends I saw in Arizona:
Anna’s Hummingbird, Gila Woodpecker, Verdin, Rosey-Faced Love Bird

Fauna
I saw a lot of wild life this month. In Vermont a couple of Wild Turkeys liked to graze in our yard and in NY State I saw a bunch of creatures including a family of White-Tailed Deer carefully tromping through the snowy woods as well as:
Chipmunks, A Skunk, A Painted Turtle, A Groundhog, Calves
Creativity
My creativity was pretty good this month. I’m still hitting my self-imposed every Tuesday post goal, so it’s all good, but my posts are still accidentally way longer than usual. I just really need to get back into a routine instead of writing for 4+ hours a few days in a row to finish these long posts.
My plan to write a little every day hasn’t really been working this month – I was too busy 🙂 ! So I might need a new plan.
Emotional
My emotions have been great this month! Despite having a lot going on, I was surrounded by my loved ones the whole time, still had some time to relax, and was able to dive into my creative pursuits. It’s been a great month 🙂 .
Money
My money continues to confound me. I hit a fun new milestone:
And here is where my net worth ended the month (and a new all-time high):
Conclusion
And that’s what I got up to in April! It was a whirlwind of a month, but I suspect May is going to be even wilder because we’re going international once again.
My Partner and I are going to the Galápagos Islands, which are off the coast of Ecuador in South America. I’m excited to snorkel, see cool wildlife and revel in the beauty of this National Park that’s also a Marine Reserve. It should be a fun time!

I love Vermont! I’ve been to Brattleboro, Stowe, Burlington and Montpelier (you can walk right into the state house and look around, which is kind of crazy).
Vermont has it all: beautiful nature, friendly people, amazing food and beer. Also, it has excellent politics. I’d much rather spend my money in a place that protects the rights of its people than one that’s trying to take them away.
You can tell the guy who named the state didn’t speak great French, though. It should really be Montver. 🙂
OOooh that resistance garden cowl looks amazing, and I love that it comes in a bundled-with-yarn version. I’ve been working on the same blanket for 2 years and am bored with it and barely knitting at all! (except for almost 2 resistance hats (just gotta finish the tassel on #2)). Your sweater looks amazing.
Congrats on finishing your sweater! I hope you get some wear out of it before it gets too warm.
Ooooh another game to add to my shopping list even though I literally haven’t played anything since I beat Klaus in Dave the Diver, really gotta get back to it haha.
I’ve been sleeping on a too soft mattress lately and my back hurts too — looking forward to your mattress review.
