A year and a half ago, I published a post called How Pursuing FIRE Has Changed How I Act At Work. It recapped how I’ve changed as I inched towards financial independence: from doing anything my boss and company asks without question to erecting some boundaries that allow me have a better work/life balance, actually improve my performance and make my work life far more tolerable. Microaggressions And Giving Up On My Favorite Company
About a year ago, a potential new hire reached out to me. I’m a black woman, the only African American at our company at the time, and the new hire is also a black woman who wanted to know how my experience has been at this (very white) company in this (very white) marketing industry. She asked about specific things like diversity, inclusion and microaggressions.

8 Months To Retirement: Shifting My Mindset To “This Is The Last Time”
This is a continuation of my monthly series that records what’s happening in my final stretch to early retirement. If you’re interested in previous posts, they’re here.
There are 8 months and change until I quit my job forever. That amount of time at once feels short and long. On the short side, I remember vividly what I was doing 8 months ago – work and non-work activities. Though if I try to think back more than 1.5-2 years, I only remember the non-work activities, which gives me reassurance that I’ll realize none of these nonsense job dumpster fires will ‘matter’ in retirement – or ever did really matter. Should I Reveal My Identity Online?
When I decided to pursue financial independence at the beginning of 2015 I started looking for role models to follow – people that have written about their experience that could help me understand what I would be in for and what to expect during this journey. Luckily there are now an abundance of blogs on the internet that are available for free and detail people’s journey to and through early retirement. 9 Months To Retirement: I’ve Achieved DGAF Status
This is a continuation of my monthly series that records what’s happening in my final stretch to early retirement. If you’re interested in previous posts, they’re here.
I don’t know what happened. I’ve been pleading with my brain for years to not react to metaphorical office fires with a rapid heartbeat and rising stress, but it never listened. Despite knowing my job doesn’t really ‘matter’ and that there are no real negative consequences to something going wrong, my perfectionism muscle wouldn’t allow me to escape emotionally unscathed. Everything was a Category 5 emergency that continued to rattle around in my brain every evening and weekend.

The Downsides Of Working From Home
It’s been almost exactly 3 years since I started my current job and was initiated into the wonderful world of “working from home.” Before we dip into negative-ville, let’s touch on the aspects of working from home that I love: Continue reading “The Downsides Of Working From Home”

How To Slay Interviews Like A Job Hopping Fiend
My career has been a wild ride. I quit my first job without knowing my next step after being stiffed for a promotion with Manhattan rent looming over me. My first day of freedom, the Monday after my two weeks notice ended, I was working out on the elliptical at Planet Fitness and received a call from a recruiter: I was being offered a promotion and a 37% raise to work for an ad agency downtown (it’s the agency Mad Men was based on 😉 ).
